Windscreen Integrity & Safety

Small chips can spread rapidly. Prompt repair maintains structural strength and clear driver visibility.

When Can a Windscreen Be Repaired?

Not all damage requires full replacement.

A chip may be repairable if:
  • It is smaller than a 20 cent coin
  • It is not directly in the driver’s line of sight
  • It has not spread into long cracks
  • It is not located near the edge of the glass
Repairing early prevents spreading and restores strength to the affected area.

When Can a Windscreen Be Repaired?

Replacement is required when:
  • The crack is longer than allowed under safety standards
  • The damage obstructs the driver’s view
  • The chip has expanded into multiple cracks
  • The damage is near the edge of the windscreen
  • Structural integrity is compromised
Driving with a cracked windscreen reduces visibility and may affect airbag performance.

Why Small Chips Spread Quickly

Chips often expand because of:
  • Temperature changes
  • Road vibration
  • Vehicle body flex
  • Pressure changes
A small chip can become a full crack within days, especially in regional conditions with fluctuating temperatures.

Prompt repair saves money and prevents further damage.

Proper Windscreen Installation Matters

Windscreen replacement is not simply glass removal and installation. Improper installation can lead to leaks, rust, wind noise and reduced structural strength. It can also affect other vehicle safety systems. Correct replacement involves:
  • Removing damaged glass safely
  • Preparing the bonding surface
  • Using approved automotive adhesive
  • Allowing correct curing time
  • Ensuring watertight sealing
  • Resetting camera synchronisations for vehicle safety systems

ADAS and Sensor Considerations

Many modern vehicles have Advanced Driver Assistance Systems that rely on sensors mounted near the windscreen. These may include:
  • Lane departure warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Forward collision warning
  • Rain sensors
  • Automatic headlights

Insurance and Windscreen Repairs

Many insurance policies include windscreen cover. In some cases, chip repair may be covered with minimal or no excess.

If required, we can assist with documentation for insurance claims.

Windscreen Repair FAQs

Yes. The windscreen contributes to vehicle structural rigidity and supports airbag deployment. Even a small chip weakens the glass.

Chip repairs typically take up to 45 minutes.

Full windscreen replacement usually takes longer, including adhesive curing time before the vehicle can be driven safely.

Safe drive-away time depends on the adhesive used and weather conditions. You will be advised when the vehicle is safe to drive.

A repaired chip may still be faintly visible, but the goal is to restore structural strength and prevent spreading. Visibility is usually significantly improved.

Small cracks often spread without warning. Early repair reduces replacement cost and improves safety.

In Victoria, a windscreen must not obstruct the driver’s view. Cracks in the driver’s line of sight or severe damage may result in a failed Roadworthy inspection.

Yes. Significant cracks, damage in the driver’s vision area or compromised structural integrity can cause a Roadworthy inspection failure.

Couple of weeks ago I had a nail in my tyre and needed it repaired quickly. I went to 2 other tyre places in Moe. First said he doesn't have the time to fix it, the next said sorry we shut in 4 mins. I drove past Tyrepower and noticed the rollar door up. It was after hours but I still called to try my luck. Luckily for me they answered and were willing to fix my tyre then and there. He worked back nearly an hour and a half past knock off time and still fit me in. Drove away more then a happy customer.🙂

Thank you to Moe Tyrepower for assistance after my tyre blew out on the highway. You checked the damaged tyre and gave good advice on my options - and then would not take payment for your time and the work you did. I appreciated your help when I was so far from home.

Fitted a complicated aftermarket rear camber kit for me. Did a great job for a reasonable price on my Classic 1985 Mercedes. Good Tradesman as they were able to achieve a good result without removing seats 💺 etc to get at suspension components. Lots of other Workshops would just avoid the job. 🙏 handles great and negative camber from first photo reduced to stop tire wear.
